Windstorm Protection

Windstorm Protection Program

Clear Lake Shores is in a county designated to require windstorm protection. The State of Texas Windstorm Inspection Program is a voluntary program, although participation in the program is recommended.

Structure Compliance

The structure only needs to comply with the requirements of the building specifications adopted by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) if the structure requires the windstorm portion of the homeowner's insurance policy to be provided by the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA). Check with your insurance provider or your lending institution to determine if this is the case.

Seaward Zone Construction

For construction in the Seaward Zone (Clear Lake Shores), a three-second gust basic wind speed of 130 mph must be used. The location of the building or structure will determine the basic wind speed that must be used.

Structure Inspection

A structure must be inspected during construction to verify that it complies with the prescriptive methods contained in the International Residential Code (IRC), International Building Code (IBC), or the design of the Texas licensed professional engineer of record. A structure may be inspected by either a TDI windstorm field inspector or an appointed Texas licensed professional engineer.
